Rowing solo and completely unsupported from Hawai’i to Australia, more than 5000 miles of open ocean, Tez Steinberg is set to do the unthinkable. With thousands of feet of ocean below him and above him only sky, he toils all day, everyday, and most nights as well to keep his course. He will do this alone for the next 4 months through the Pacific Ocean’s incredibly volatile seas. More people have walked on the moon than have done this row, and no one has done it like this. There’s no looking back and there’s no turning around.
I am working as 2nd Unit Director of Photography on a feature length documentary film about Tez. I partnered with fellow photographer Philip Scott Andrews to shoot Tez along with our cinematography duties. These photographs are but a sliver of the work we’ve shot together of Tez during the last few months. Most of these images were captured on the Fujifilm GFX 100s, the digital medium format powerhouse.
Tez has become a friend and it was emotional and hard to digest being there with him 13 miles of shore as the sun’s last light faded into night, we said goodbye and Godspeed, turned our camera boat towards Waikiki and watched his boat’s light disappear into the night like a fading star. Our 7 person crew will be the last people to see him until he arrives in Australia.
